Request time off

For staffUpdated 2 min read

In the app, open More, then Request time off. Ask for whole days or part of a day, and cancel the request while it's still pending.

Ask for time off in the Shift Amp app. Your manager approves or denies every request. Nothing changes on your schedule until they approve it, so plan to work any shifts you already have in the meantime.

Ask for time off

  1. Select the More tab (three dots), then select Request time off. The Time off screen opens.
  2. Select Request time off.
  3. Choose All day or Partial day.
  4. For whole days, set the Start date and End date. For a single day, use the same date for both. For part of a day, set the Date, then the Start and End times.
  5. If you see Type, choose the kind of time off. Nothing is chosen for you.
  6. If you like, add a Note (optional) for your manager. If your workplace asks for a reason, the box is called Reason and you have to fill it in.
  7. Select Submit request.

You're back on the Time off screen, and the request is listed under Upcoming as "Pending".

Partial-day times are in your location's time zone, which the form shows. If you work at locations in different time zones, choose one under Time zone. A partial day has to end on the same date it starts. An end time of 12:00 AM means midnight.

If your workplace tracks PTO

The form shows a Paid time off box with This request, Available now and Would leave, so you can see what the request takes from your balance. Each type says whether it "Comes out of your PTO".

  • If you don't have enough PTO, the box warns you, and the request is refused when you submit it. Choose fewer days, or talk to your manager, who can adjust your allowance.
  • If your workplace offers unpaid time off, you can select Take these dates unpaid to keep your balance for later.

For your balance and what each figure means, see Check your PTO balance.

What happens next

  • When your manager decides, you get a Time off approved or Time off denied notification. Any note from your manager appears with the request on the Time off screen.
  • Approved time off makes you unavailable for those dates or hours. If you had shifts then, your manager opens them for coworkers or gives them to someone else when they approve.
  • If a manager cancels time off they approved, you get Approved time off cancelled, and you can be scheduled then again.

Cancel a pending request

  1. Select the More tab, then Request time off.
  2. Under Upcoming, find the request marked "Pending" and select Cancel request.

The request is canceled right away, with no confirmation, and "Request cancelled." appears.

If your request can't be sent

  • If the Time off screen says "Time off is handled outside Shift Amp here. Talk to your manager to book it — anything already approved still shows below.", your workplace books time off another way.
  • If your workplace needs notice, the form says how much. A request with less notice is refused. For something urgent, talk to your manager, who can record the time off for you.
