Clock in and out on your phone

For staffUpdated 3 min read

Open the time clock from the Today tab in the app. Nothing counts until the app confirms it, and a punch made with no signal can be saved to sync later.

You clock in and out in the Shift Amp app, from the Today tab. Wait for the app to confirm each punch with the time it recorded. If you don't see Time clock on the Today tab, your workplace records time another way.

Clock in

  1. Select the Today tab (the house icon).
  2. In the next-shift card, select Time clock.
  3. Check the scheduled shift shown: its position, location and time.
  4. Select Clock in. The first time, your phone asks whether Shift Amp can use your location. Either answer lets the punch go through.
  5. Wait for a message such as "Clock-in confirmed at 5:57 AM." The status above it changes to "Clocked in".

If you're working a different location or position, select Choose another location or position, choose both, then select Clock in. When nothing on the schedule matches, the app asks you to confirm: select Clock in without a schedule. Your manager reviews entries like this. Some workplaces only allow clocking in for a scheduled shift, and then the app tells you to check with your manager.

Take a break and clock out

  1. On the Today tab, select Time clock · clocked in.
  2. To take a break, select Start break. When you're back, select End break.
  3. To finish, select Clock out, then Confirm clock out. If a break is still running, the button reads End break and clock out, and your manager reviews the entry.

Signing out, switching organization or leaving the screen never clocks you out.

If you have no signal

If a punch can't reach Shift Amp, the app says "We couldn't reach the server. Your punch was NOT confirmed — retry, or save it to sync later."

  1. Select the same button again to retry. A retry can't record the punch twice.
  2. If you're still offline, select Save punch to sync later.

The punch is listed on the time clock, waiting to sync. It syncs when you open the app, return to it or get a connection, or when you select Sync now. It isn't recorded until then.

  • Saved punches use your phone's clock, carry no location, and are flagged for your manager to review.
  • A saved punch must sync within 24 hours, and a phone holds up to 12. Nothing syncs while the app is closed.
  • Saving only works if the time clock loaded before you lost signal. Opened with no signal, it shows "We couldn’t load your clock status. Check your connection and try again." and no buttons. Clock in once you're back online, or tell your manager the time.

Why the app asks for your location

Shift Amp reads your location once, at the moment you clock in or out, so your workplace can confirm the punch happened at work. It never reads it during breaks, and never tracks you continuously or in the background.

Your phone asks the first time you clock in or out, whether or not your workplace checks locations. You can say no, and punching still works. If your workplace does check, a punch without your location, or from outside the area, is flagged for your manager to review. It's never refused.
