Pick up an open shift

For staffUpdated 2 min read

In the app, open Open shifts and claim one. It's a request: the shift becomes yours only when a manager approves your claim.

Shifts your manager posts as open, and shifts coworkers need covered, show in the Shift Amp app when you're able to work them. Claiming one is a request. Your manager decides who gets each shift, and it isn't yours until they approve you.

Claim a shift

  1. On the Today tab (the house icon), select Open shifts. You can also select the More tab (three dots), then Available shifts. Both open the same list.
  2. Find a shift. Open shift means your manager posted it. Coworker needs coverage means a coworker asked for cover. Each card also shows how many hours you're already scheduled that week.
  3. Select Claim shift.
  4. Select Confirm claim. To back out, select Not now.

The shift leaves the list and moves to My claims, marked Pending.

What happens next

  • If your manager approves you, you get Shift added to your schedule or Open shift is now yours, and the shift appears on your Schedule tab (the calendar icon).
  • If the shift goes to someone else, or the request closes without you, you get Shift filled by someone else.
  • If your manager turns your claim down, you get Claim denied. Any note they left shows on the claim in My claims.

To check on your claims at any time, select the More tab, then My claims.

Withdraw a claim

  1. Select the More tab, then My claims.
  2. On a claim marked Pending, select Withdraw claim.

There's no confirmation, and nobody is notified. Once your manager has decided a claim, you can't withdraw it.

Which shifts you see

You only see shifts you could work: at a location you work at, for a position you hold, with no overlapping shift and no approved time off. Shifts that have already started aren't listed. Use the filters at the top to narrow the list by type, location or position.

New shifts can also reach you as notifications: Open shifts available when your manager publishes open shifts, and Shift available to claim when a coworker needs cover. Select either one to open the list. You're only notified about shifts within your approved availability, but the list shows every shift you can claim.

If you don't see Open shifts on Today or Available shifts under More, your workplace has turned off picking up shifts. Tell your manager if you'd like more hours. My claims still shows your earlier claims.

To trade shifts instead, see Swap a shift with a coworker.
